What to Measure Before Hot Tub Hauling

The access measurements and photos that help prevent surprises on pickup day.

Practical planning details for what to measure before hot tub hauling

The short answer: document the unit, make utilities safe, clear the route and confirm what the provider will and will not handle before pickup day.

Measure the route, not only the tub

The smallest opening controls the plan. Record the tub’s longest and widest dimensions, then measure every gate, doorway and side-yard pinch point. Include overhead clearance where roof edges, branches or pergola beams cross the route. A path that looks wide in one photo may tighten sharply at a corner.

Record turns and elevation changes

A whole unit on dollies needs room to rotate. Photograph ninety-degree turns, deck steps, sloped lawns and transitions between pavers, grass and gravel. Count steps and note handrails or posts that reduce usable width. These details help determine whether a whole-unit move is realistic or whether sectioning is the safer scope.

Plan the loading point

Show where a trailer or truck could legally and safely load. Mention narrow streets, steep driveways, gates, community access rules and parking limits that could affect the distance. The provider can then distinguish the carry route from the vehicle approach instead of treating them as one unknown.

Protect finished surfaces

Call out composite decking, painted steps, delicate pavers and irrigation near the path. Ask what moving blankets, runners or ground protection are appropriate. Protection cannot fix a route that is too narrow, but it can reduce avoidable contact on a workable route.
